I was out of town this weekend and had the opportunity to visit another church that I enjoy going to. They have a magnificent choir that I love to listen to.
Their song yesterday started like this: "For what earthly reason would the Father send His Son to die on a cross? "
It ended like this: "I was the taker, He was the Giver. I was the reason, the one earthly reason was me."
I've heard it said that if I was the only person on earth that needed a Saviour, God would still have sent His Son to die on that cross for me. He gave the ultimate sacrifice and I am so undeserving of that!
But I don't want to just be a taker. I want to be a giver too. I do that best by being faithful in the small opportunities that He has gives me.
Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote this: "To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived-that is to have succeeded."
I have worked at hospice for over six years now. As I care for my patients, they have taught me so many things. One thing stands out. Those who have the most peaceful deaths are the ones who appear to have been givers in their lives. They have contributed something to someone else's life. They leave this earth peacefully, knowing that it is a better place because they were here and gave of themselves to someone else.
Today, I don't just want to "take" of the blessings that God has given me. I want to give back too!
