Reading this book every year in December is the gift I give to myself for Christmas. It is the love story of Mary and Joseph. And a beautiful story it is.
I really believe that Marjorie Holmes was inspired to write it. She writes beautifully and brings these two and their immediate families alive for me. Maybe i like it so much because I am the mother of daughters.
Can you imagine your 13 year old coming to you and telling you she is pregnant with the Son of God? Can you feel Joseph's pain when she tells him she is pregnant and he must struggle with the unimaginable? The one he loves and adores is pregnant with a child who is not his?
Can you imagine their fear when they are forced to make their way to Bethlehem, to pay taxes they can't afford? It was a four day trip on the back of a donkey for her and she was obviously in labor the last day of travel.
And when they finally found the stable, there was no midwife, so together they went through the pain of childbirth. They were just two kids, but they were two kids that God trusted His son to.
"He turned and looked a moment at the manger. "This is our cross, Mary. Yours and mine-for you know how much I love Him too. It is our cross to know that our son's hour will come and we can't stop it. To live with that certainty every day that in his living and his dying He will be lifting the yoke for all men. ......He lifted her chin and gazed into her stricken face.......and it seemed to Joseph that hs knew now why it had been his fate to love Mary, perhaps with a greater love than man has ever been asked to give a wife. For that love was akin to the love personified in the child: Sacrifice"
If you have never read this story, give yourself the gift of doing so this year. I think you can still get it on amazon.com
