never too old
Wow, what a busy week I've had! I only got to watch my babies three days last week because the other four days were totally booked. I used to think when I got to this age, I would be spending long empty days sitting in my rocking chair crocheting baby blankets! Definately not the way things are playing out!
I went to my very first Christian writer's workshop on Saturday. It was wonderful. The speaker for the day was a gentleman by the name of Dennis Hensley. Not only was he very entertaining, he gave us a lot of information about writing. One thing he told us was that we are never too old to start writing if that is what we want to do.
He told a story about a woman he interviewed once who was 102 years old and she was so busy that she could only give him one hour for the interview. When she was in her 50's her doctor husband died and since she was his nurse, she lost not only her husband but her job. She sat around for awhile and then decided to get up and "do" something. So In her 50's she went to school to be a teacher. When she was in her 60's she decided to go back to school again to become a social worker because of all of the trouble kids she was seeing. In her 70's she bought a huge farm and turned it into a home for troubled teens. When she turned 100, she decided it was time to start writing about about what her life had been like for the first 100 years!
I guess we are never too old to try something new! That story reminded me of my own Grandmother. She lived to be 102. When she was 75, after her first husband died, she married her high school sweetheart. They were able to celebrate their 22nd wedding anniversay before he died. I remember watching them together and I knew that they were not only great friends who offered companionship to each other, they had both found love again at the age of 75.
This past weekend I took care of a "young" man; he was my age. :) He was dying because of a life style that he thought was "living"; but in fact, his life style was one that was killing him. My heart ached for him and his family. He would never have the opportunity to do something new in the future decades that he robbed himself of.
In Psalms 71:18 we are told that God also has a purpose for us when are old. This verse says : "Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and they power to every one that is to come. " What a ministry that can be to those of us who are older. To talk about what God has done for us in our lives and to allow our lives to be a testimony of His grace. I pray that I never get too old to do that.
