Jack reminded me of me today. He had eaten breakfast but two hours later he was in the frig looking for "a snack". i told him that we could look in the lunch box his mommy sent with him and get something "healthy" out of it. (his momma knows that Mawmaw and Pa could live on cookies, icecream and popcorn) I got out the carrots, the strawberries and the cheese. He looked it all over and then looked at me.He wasn't smiling. Then with all the indignation in his husky little voice he yelled, "Mawmaw, that's not healthy food!" And he stomped away.
As soon as I could wipe the smile off my face, I called him back to the kitchen. I had some apple slices and peanut butter in a bowl for him. I asked him if that looked healthy. "No! Iwant cookies!" Guess he was hungry because after he was told "no cookies" he ate the apples and peanut butter.
I am a lot like that when it comes to the things of God. I know that Bible reading, prayer and meeting together with God's people are all spiritually healthy things for me to do. But when I want to do something else in that time that "tastes" better, I can convince myself that shopping, watching TV and even reading are all healthy. It isn't that those are bad things, they just can't take the place of the healthy things.
Interesting enough, Jack seemed to enjoy his healthy snack once he started to eat it. Just like I enjoy talking to God, reading His word and worshipping with His people.
Now, since I am not a perfect Christian or a perfect gramma, Jack and I are going to eat a cookie while we watch Diego. I promise I will read him a Bible story during "rest time".
