Fashioned by Love

Fashioned by Love

Living a distance from my beloved Gramma when I was a child was difficult for both of us. But distance is never a factor when it comes to love. My Gramma made sure of that for me.
Every day of the first twelve years of my life I was reminded of her love by the dress I wore. Gramma was my personal seamstress.  She knew Dad and Mom would buy me the necessitiesbut she was going to make sure I had pretty things to wear.
Every year in September she would make six dresses for me. One for each day of the school week and an extra special one to wear on Sundays.
But it was always the Christmas and Easter dresses that made me feel really loved. They were complete with ruffles, ribbons and pretty buttons. Many times she would make my baby sister one to match mine.
It wasn’t until years later I realized the sacrifice that went into those dresses.  She lived on the minimum wages she made as a cook at a tiny restaurant. I am sure she denied herself of much to give me dresses. Now that I have grandchildren of my own I know those dresses were fashioned by love.
Not only did she design my clothes, I like to think her loving example helped to design my character.
